Polar Plunge 2024

The annual Royal Canadian Geographical Society Polar Plunge is back!

This year we are joined by notable Canadians, adventurers, and RCGS Fellows. The #RCGSPolarPlunge will help the Society raise important funding for the rich storytelling and engaging interviews that take place under the banner of the Canadian Geographic Explore podcast.

Our goal is to raise $35,000! With your help we can continue to expand Canadians’ knowledge of our country’s diverse human and physical landscapes, better preparing them for an uncharted future.

Why I'm taking the plunge...

Stories. Stories that need to be told. Stories that remind us of the power of storytelling. Stories that push us to become better storytellers - to dig deeper, to ask questions and hold those in positions of authority to account. Stories that bring us together in a world that threatens to divide us.

Take some of the recent Canadian Geographic reporting that puts a spotlight on oceans - Karen Pinchin's "Farming a changing sea," Nicolas Winkler's "Death on the ocean floor: a great white shark mystery," Alanna Mitchell's "'There’s no coming back from this:' Why the global ocean crisis threatens us all," and I'll add my own too, "The cod delusion."

As we watch the undoing of journalism in Canada - one round of layoffs, then another, and another - supporting Canadian Geographic and the Explore podcast is  something constructive that I can do to show my support for original and investigative reporting that is as rich on narrative as it is best evidence.

Join me for the 2024 RCGS Polar Plunge - if only because it's my first and I have no idea what I'm getting myself into.

And if you can't, please donate generously.

Thank you: I reached my donation goal - now for the plunge part!

Sunday 3rd Mar
I am absolutely humbled that friends and family showed up in a big way to support my fundraising goal for tomorrow's polar plunge - it's the third annual, but my first-ever, and hopefully a new annual tradition to support a publication and podcast that delivers great journalism.

To everyone who donated - you're all the absolute coolest.  And bravo to the whole RCGS / Can Geo team because the overall fundraising goal has also been reached.

Tomorrow, we'll plunge with pride!
